Winemaking Notes:
Viognier, the dominant grape in this blend, nearly vanished in the 1960s, dwindling to just 8 acres. But thanks to the dedication of growers in Condrieu, where it remains the only permitted white grape, this remarkable varietal survived and thrives today. As winegrowers, we owe much to this village for preserving Viognier’s legacy, and we named this wine Condriesque in its honor.
Rhone variety white blends at their best have the unique combination of freshness and richness at the same time. We have discovered the secret to capturing that unique quality at Dineen Vineyards is by fermenting our Roussanne (42%) and Viognier (58%) together. We highlight the natural freshness these grapes achieve on our site by picking at exactly the right moment. We wait for flavors to peak and reach balance with acidity.
We amplify the richness by fermenting in French oak barrels and aging on the lees for 5 months. We fermented it this year in 20% standard 225-liter barrels and 80% large format 500-liter barrels with 23% new. We stirred the lees in the barrel every week for 4 months during aging. This adds opulence and texture to the wine. Each barrel becomes a unique expression, and when we bring them all back together before bottling, the result is a complex combination of fruit and spice with richness that provides nearly endless food pairing options.
