Assemblage: 100% Merlot; hand-picked from our Winery Block on September 22, 2021

Elévage: Fermented in stainless steel. Barrel-aged for 22 months in new and neutral French oak from select cooperages

Vintage Notes: 2021 was an unusual growing season in Washington, marked by record-breaking heat which resulted in low yields. The most significant event was the historic “heat dome” in late June which sent temperatures in Zillah to upwards of 112 degrees. Our vineyard fared well during this heat as we watered liberally in advance and throughout.  The rest of the summer remained hot with “Grower Degree Days” averaging 8% more than 2015; one of the warmest years in recent memory. Temperatures cooled in September and October allowing for extended ripening and for acids to hang on. Overall, the harvest was marked by small berries, loose clusters and excellent fruit quality.

Winemaker Notes: The 2021 Merlot greets the senses with red fruit notes, cooked peach, and ripe red raspberry, all beautifully accompanied by toasted oak nuances and a touch of cranberry. On the palate, a medium body and well-defined tannins create an inviting structure, while flavors of dark chocolate and vanilla intertwine seamlessly. The addition of stone fruit, reminiscent of pomegranate, lends elegance to the wine, which culminates in a lasting finish that leaves a memorable impression. This wine is suitable to drink now and can age for 10 plus years.

Recommended Food Pairings:

  • Herb-marinated steak, pork ribs or lamb; meats complimented with fresh-herb sauces such as chimichurri or persillade
  • Roasted chicken and potatoes
  • Pasta with red-sauce and a pinch of chili
  • Grilled vegetables such as eggplant, zucchini or carrots
  • Aged and tangy cheeses such as goat cheese, "old" gouda or Roquefort
  • For dessert: Berries and Fruit, anything with a red fruit sauce

Ratings:

Jancis Robinson - 16 (Distinguished) Sustainable WA certified. Bright medium ruby in colour. Savoury, lightly floral and juicy. Fine, powdery tannin and high fresh acidity. Candied rose hip lingers on the finish. (SCJ) 14.2% Drink 2023 - 2029

Owen Bargreen  - 90pts This 2021 Merlot is nicely structured and soft upon the approach. Milk chocolate and sagebrush notes combine with good verve and refined tannins on the palate. Enjoy now and over the next few years to come. Drink 2024-2030
