Winemaking Notes: Inspiration struck with the 2023 vintage. We blended together Petit Verdot—an unsung hero at our vineyard—with Syrah—one of our favorites—and created a new wine to share with the world. We suspected that these two, not often joined varieties from our estate, would be a perfect pairing, and we were right.
Inspired by the wines of Sicily, particularly those grown on the slopes of Mount Etna, where vineyards sit at elevation, on volcanic soils and produce wines that are bold, structured, and mysterious—much like Sicily itself. We were drawn to that tension between power and elegance. When blended thoughtfully—in our case, Petit Verdot with Syrah—the varieties truly dance together.
The Petit Verdot in this blend comes from Quinn’s Block. Quinn, much like this wine, has a dramatic flair—he plays in a band and attends film school—and his namesake block consistently produces fruit with presence and personality. Petit Verdot brings rich tannin and structure along with surprising freshness and floral aromatics to our red blends. Our Syrah is expressively bright and also earthy and dark, but always smooth and rich.
Not all wines blend together well and at many other vineyards this blend might not work. Here, however, the two complement each other beautifully. The bold, full-bodied structure of the Petit Verdot is tamed by the opulence of the Syrah. Together they create an interplay of dark and fresh fruit, and both provide their floral and mineral notes. The result is a wine that feels both powerful and graceful—a new and very special expression of our vineyard.
