Assemblage: 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Petit Verdot & 20% Malbec; hand-picked from our Certified Sustainable Estate Vineyard between September 22 and October 5, 2021.
Elévage: Fermented in stainless steel then barrel aged for 21 months in French oak from select cooperages.
Vintage Notes: 2021 was an unusual growing season in Washington, marked by record-breaking heat which resulted in low yields. The most significant event was the historic “heat dome” in late June which sent temperatures in Zillah to upwards of 112 degrees. Our vineyard fared well during this heat as we watered liberally in advance and throughout. The rest of the summer remained hot with “Grower Degree Days” averaging 8% more than 2015; one of the warmest years in recent memory. Temperatures cooled in September and October allowing for extended ripening and for acids to hang on. Overall, the harvest was marked by small berries, loose clusters and excellent fruit quality.
Winemaker Notes: Our flagship Heritage Red Blend is a classic, right-bank Bordeaux blend that is Cabernet Sauvignon dominant. This vintage showcases an artful harmony achieved through careful blending. On the nose, it is reminiscent of “Sacher Torte” the German cake that brings together dark chocolate with nuanced fruit notes, which is further enhanced by the presence of warm baking spices. The palate is graced by the presence of ripe red fruits, with a burst of fresh cherries that adds a bright and lively character to the wine. Subtle nuances of toasted coconut and caramelized sugar contribute to a harmonious taste. The finish is beautifully soft and plush, enveloping the mouth with delicate tannins that leave a lasting impression. This wine is suitable to drink now and will age for 10 plus years.
