Winemaking Notes: Of all Rhône varieties, Syrah is perhaps the truest reflection of the place where it grows. Our vineyard’s sun-drenched slopes, layered soils, and cool evening temperatures bring out its classic depth and character, beautifully balanced with freshness and elegance. It is a variety that transparently expresses both place and intention.
Winemakers love Syrah because it responds more to choices made in the winery than most other red grape varieties. Our goal is always to amplify the natural complexity that our estate vineyard already provides. We choose yeasts and barrels, and in certain fermentations we intentionally include stems to highlight the dichotomy of bright freshness and earthy ripeness that defines our Syrah.
The 2023 vintage is a combination of Catherine’s block (75%) and Bridget’s block (25%). Though planted only a year apart, these blocks sit on slightly different soils and have very different aspects, producing distinctly expressive fruit.
Syrah from Catherine’s offers dark fruit and tense minerality, which we emphasized that by including stems to one fermenter. Bridget’s block, on the other hand, brings freshness, spice, and heightened aromatic intensity. We selected specific yeasts to further tease that out these qualities
Together, these elements created the 2023 Syrah that is both intriguing and entirely enjoyable.
