Winemaking Notes: Cabernet Franc is a variety that grows particularly well in The Hills and at Dineen Vineyards. It’s the result of a magic combination — the meticulous attention of our viticultural team, ideal sun exposure, complex soils, and cooler nights brought on by elevation all allow this grape to truly hang on the vine. That extended hang time lets Cabernet Franc develop the floral aromatics, vibrant red fruit, and savory undertones that make the variety so beloved.
For the 2023 Cabernet Franc we brought together four different blocks from our celebrated estate. We’ve been growing Cabernet Franc on our site since 2001, and we have homed in on the exact techniques needed to tease out precisely what we love about it.
45% of the blend is from Catherine’s block, our oldest block. Catherine’s provides richness, minerality and brambly fruit. 29% comes from Rose’s block. Rose’s is a unique clone of Cabernet Franc and provides all the herbal and floral elements to the wine and smooths out the finish as well. Marissa’s block is next at 18% of the blend and brings spice and dark fruit along with decadence. And finally, the block right outside the winery door, aptly named Winery block, adds freshness and balance.
Each block was fermented separately, aged separately, and combined in these precise percentages to create a wine that is distinctly Cabernet Franc and distinctly Dineen Vineyards — an expression of both site and thoughtful intention from vine to bottle
